When “Hitting It Like A Girl” Is A Supreme Compliment

I plopped on the couch last night as the GolfChannel’s “Mile High Showdown” Long Drive extravaganza popped on the screen. There were your usual hugely beefed up guys swinging 145 mph+ and hitting missiles over 220mph. But you can understand their feats given the ultra-long backswings and grunting follow throughs.

However, when Troy Mullins stepped up, Twitter was amazed. Her homemade swing is fantastic and even the broadcasters marveled how she launched her drives so far without swinging like a typical long drive competitor. Oh, the 24-year-old has only competed for two years.

Yes, it was up in altitude of Denver (add roughly 10-15% for the thin air), but it was also drizzling. Yet, Mullins cranked one 402. 4-0-2. She also won the event with a 370-yard bomb.

Swing professor Brandel Chamblee offered his analysis.

The men’s division delivered an upset winner in Maurice Allen. His celebration was pretty cool. Maurice also admitted living in his car to afford starting on the Long Drive circuit five years ago. Allen’s winning drive was 455 but he hit one 483 in the knockout rounds.

Allen took home $18,000 while Mullins pocketed $10K.
