My senses perk up whenever I see these three magic letters: AMG, Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance division. Sure, many luxury SUVs will haul folks and cargo in opulence, but there’s always room for customers willing to pay six figures for that extra vroom.

The 2026 AMG GLE 53 SUV could be the sweet spot between the tamer 43 and raucous GLE 63. It delivers luxury, technology, interior space and extra performance. Zero to 60 arrives very quickly. And with a superbly luxurious cocoon, this ride will deliver you in style as well.

All this compares favorably in the highly competitive premium SUV category.

In essence, the 2026 AMG GLE 53 SUV brings miles of smiles for those needing extra room to haul folks and cargo in comfort and with some hustle.

SKIN

The squarish exterior is a large yet elegant design, providing more cargo room compared to its sleeker Coupe sibling. The optional MANUFAKTUR Alpine Grey paint ($750) replaces all chrome trim with deep, high-gloss black materials, providing a sinister stance. Cool puddle lights display the high-def AMG emblem from the side-view mirrors. Four-dot running lights adorn the bright Adaptive Highbeam Assist headlights, and the LED taillights look magnificent at night. Illuminated Brushed Aluminum Running Boards ($650) help when entering; however, they aren’t much help when leaving (I preferred sliding down the seat).

Striking 22-inch AMG Multi-Spoke Black wheels ($4,450) look fantastic, completing the sporty appearance while still providing a smooth ride thanks to the Air Sport Suspension. My only recommendation would be removing the prominent roof racks, as they diminish the sporty enhancements.

PERFORMANCE

The AMG version of its tamer siblings brings ample oomph to the party. Of course, the star is the 3.0-liter inline-6 engine with 429 hp and 413 lb.-ft. of torque. The adjustable warbling exhaust through quad exhausts is music to your ears as you punch the pedal. It’s lightning quick for such a large ride too, sending you from zero to 60 in 4.4 seconds. Those are some heady sports car numbers for a large people mover.

Handling is superb with the optional AMG Air Sport Suspension ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM, allowing you to both cruise comfortably and let ’er rip in turns with zero sway. The standard permanent 4MATIC AWD navigates through Mother Nature’s worst weather challenges. It can also tow up to 7,700 lbs. — not class-leading, but plenty strong for most loads.

The superb AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9-speed transmission shifts flawlessly and quickly. Sport and Sport+ modes downshift with that sweet exhaust thunder — a lovely soundtrack that motivated me to keep the radio off.

AMG Performance 4MATIC All-Wheel Drive includes the DYNAMIC SELECT system, which is fully variable and constantly adjusts in milliseconds.

You can individually select adjustments for the air suspension, steering, powertrain and throttle response via the five driving modes (Individual, Comfort, Curve, Sport and Sport+). Cruise in luxury or unleash the fun utilizing the sport paddles in full manual shift mode. Of course, I opted to remain in Sport for the custom settings, exhaust notes and excellent handling.

The able and confident brakes superbly stop the 5,578-lb. SUV in short order. Gas mileage is decent at 18/23 mpg with a 500-mile range.

CABIN

A six-figure cocoon should surround passengers in opulence, and the AMG GLE 53 delivers splendidly. There’s so much luxury and so many whiz-bang goodies to enjoy. High-end materials are abundant throughout the superb layout.

Attractive AMG Macchiato Beige/Black Nappa leather seats are heated and cooled up front (heated in the rear) and contrast well with the Natural Grain Grey Oak Wood trim. Awesome Drive-Dynamic Active Bolstering automatically adjusts lateral support when you hit a tight curve. Oh, and enjoy the four massage settings to reward you after a long day at the office or on the golf course. I regularly dialed it up.

I’m a big fan of the gearshift on the right steering wheel stalk that frees up valuable room on the console. How about heated and cooled cup holders (they work great!)? Paddle shifters change gears without a hitch. The thick sport steering wheel with the squared bottom is perfect, with microfiber suede at the 9 and 3 positions for extra grip and comfort. Several ambient lighting choices are a welcome touch.

Eight available cup holders are handy, and six USB ports are available. The power-folding second-row seats are a great touch and provide good legroom too. Cargo room starts at 33.3 cu. ft. with all seats up (you can still stack two golf bags) and expands to a spacious 74.9 cu. ft. with the second row folded down.

Soft-close doors are a personal favorite. 360-degree Surround View cameras help maneuver the AMG GLE 53 into tight confines. A double-pane panoramic roof illuminates the interior. 64-color ambient lighting ably mirrors your moods.

TECH TOYS

A large infotainment screen is clear and legible. The MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) allows you to speak conversationally. This model eliminates the COMAND knob and trackpad, but the “Hey Mercedes” voice prompt or touchscreen is easy to operate. A clear and powerful Burmester Surround System offers Standard, Surround and 3D settings to deliver studio-quality performance.

Of course, mind-boggling technology is at your disposal. Bluetooth voice transmission is impressive as well. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included.

This brawny beast also delivers the latest reassuring safety features. It will gently remind you to stay in your lane, constantly scan traffic up to 1,600 feet ahead to sense traffic patterns and help prevent frontal collisions (Collision Prevention Assist), brace you for a rear-ender, and apply PRE-SAFE braking with Pedestrian Recognition. The radar-enabled DISTRONIC adaptive cruise keeps you safely behind cars ahead.
