Let’s face it; electric-powered vehicles are here to stay. Probably. If you’re old school like me, it took a while acknowledging the impending demise of petrol fuel rides. As they say, it’s best to adjust and survive rather than stubbornly hold onto dying technology. Every auto manufacturer has done so with varying degrees of success and acclaim.

GMC’s plug-in entry is the formidable 2025 Hummer EV 3X SUV. If you’re preparing for the Apocalypse, this is the bad boy that’ll handle all doomsday warnings – well besides needing good ‘ol electricity to power it. 

The Hummer EV 3X is a must-drive for those desiring plug-in powered technology with a bold appearance, incredible horsepower, nifty off-road capabilities and, yes, a smooth ride on the streets when desired. 

Skin 

GMC designers did themselves proud as the Hummer stages a most high-profile presence. The brash, formidable and head-turning looks attracted immediate attention in any parking lot or my driveway. A definite “whoa” in Void Black paint. The long wheelbase with big, beautiful 35” mud terrain tires (when adding the Extreme Off-Road package complete with supplemental underbelly protection, locking differentials, more camera angles and upgraded axles.) and 8-foot width commands attention. The illuminated Hummer name is spelled out on the front over two robust towing hooks. Seriously, this is quite the looker.

The four removable glass roof panels (stored in the frunk) give the beast a terrific open cabin feel. And the wind noise isn’t bad at all. 

The plug-in power eliminates any dual exhausts in the rear. An optional spare wheel is affixed to the rear. 

Performance

Let’s talk power and impressive off-road abilities. First, the 2025 Hummer EV 3X SUV version is nearly supercar quick. The three motors can whisk this nearly five-ton beauty 0-60 in 3.3 seconds, thanks to its Watts to Freedom (WTF) in launch mode! How, you say? Via the three-motor configuration delivering 1,000 hp. I mean it’s wicked fast and will surprise any speed demon challenging at the stoplight. 

Even the one-pedal mode stops the Hummer in quick fashion while regenerating the batteries. I tested the capabilities of the one-pedal and honestly didn’t need to touch the brake in city driving. 

The rear-wheel steering system allows for tight turns. CrabWalk Mode directs all the tires in the same direction when needing diagonal clearance from an obstacle. Maximum towing capacity is a nifty 8,500 lbs. 

The off-road tech is industry-leading, with excellent clearance and cameras under the chassis. I dare you to get stuck. The 3X motors provide a driving range of 311 miles. Battery charging takes roughly 40 minutes to reach 80 percent. It’s best to use a DC charger or Tesla Supercharger for the quickest electric refills. Note: It will take longer during the hot summer, as sizzling batteries take longer to recharge.  

The driving experience is nearly silent, unless you push the exhaust noise selection. Its “rumble” is interesting, so try it out on the test drive. The bottom line is this EV can make any wheeler novice feel completely in control. Driving modes include Normal, Tow/Haul, WTF, CrabWalk and Extract that lifts the Hummer an additional six inches. Surface texture and grip are even transmitted through the electric power-steering setup, assisting in gauging traction. A total of 17 cameras give helpful views around or below the Hummer. 

Cabin

The Lunar Shadow cabin materials are very nice, but more utility than luxury. Meaning with the roof panels off, you can literally hose down the interior for dust, mud or whatever enters the cabin on those deliciously dirty off-road excursions. The 12-way power front seats are comfy, heated/ventilated with four lumbar settings. 

A meaty heated steering wheel feels wonderful in your mitts. The floating center console allows for handy storage underneath. The wide body will easily house five adults. Storage is 35.9 cu. ft. and 81.8 cu. ft. with the rear seats folded down. Plus, there’s more storage underneath the removable trunk lid. The frunk is handy as an ice chest option. 

Visibility is incredible, mostly due to the oversized side mirrors and handy unencumbered three-lane-wide camera view in the rearview mirror. The windshield has three wipers, given the long and narrow shape. Wireless phone charging is included, as are several ambient lighting color schemes. 

Those removable glass panels still provide airy lighting when in place. 

Tech check

GMC didn’t forget those who demand big technology. A large 13.4-inch infotainment screen and 12.3-inch digital instrument panel requires a learning curve (hey, why not crack open the manual?). 

Wireless AppleCar Play, Android Auto and the responsive Google Assistant are standard. A superb Bose Premium Surround 14-speaker audio system is studio-quality impressive. Super Cruise allows for hands-free driving. 

Active Noise Cancellation included in the audio system makes the cocoon soothingly quiet by eliminating higher-pitched sounds or highway tire noise.

Abundant safety features are ready to protect you in potential harm’s way. Helpful alerts include Forward Collision, Rear Cross-Traffic, Blind Spot Warnings and Enhanced Automatic Parking Assist.

The 2025 GMC Hummer EV 3X SUV is quite the looker and performer on all types of roads.  It drives smaller than it looks, can turn on a dime, handles nature’s obstacles and delivers smooth sailing on the highway. It isn’t cheap, but if you want a near Apocalypse-fighting ride it will deliver miles of smiles.
