During the iconic James Bond movie Thunderball, our hero became visibly tense while an adversary drove him manically on winding roads. Noticing his discomfort, the driver said, “Some men just don’t like being driven.” Bond replied, “No, some men don’t like being taken for a ride.”

Well, that exchange won’t be uttered when chilling in the sumptuous 2026 Mercedes- Maybach S 580. It confidently exudes impeccable luxury, comfort, smooth driving chops and amazing technology. When exiting the vast rear seat, one can confidently display they don’t mind being driven…or taken for a ride.

The Mercedes-Maybach is designed for passengers with the means and desire to stretch out on reclining heated and massaging rear seats. While driving it for the feature, no one looked at me, but rather what high-toned celebs were sitting in the rear. The Maybach has that much presence with a starting price of $207,150 that can increase to over $335,000. Hey, if you have the bread, why not add this and a paid chauffeur to your lofty lifestyle?

SKIN

The 2026 Mercedies-Maybach S 580 casts a long and sleek presence. It’s seven inches longer than less expensive Mercedes-Benz S-class. The Obsidian Black Metallic paint glistens in the sun, giving it a jewel-like appearance. Everything is flawlessly constructed. The famous three-star hood ornament allows the driver to measure the length when parking.

Special 20” Maybach Forged Wheels with a high-gloss finish fit well inside the stretched frame. The entire exterior exudes luxury (and cost) from every angle. You can order two-toned paint that is hand sanded for a seamless appearance. The grille is bold, as are the exceptional headlights.

It truly is an eye-catching exterior.

PERFORMANCE

The Maybach S 580 houses a silky, powerful 4.0L V8 biturbo engine with mild hybrid drive. 496hp and 516 lb-ft. of torque scoots the 5,126-pound ride in 4.7 seconds (0-60). You can opt for the V12 in the S680, yet the V8 has plenty of oomph (and better gas mileage).

High-pressure Direct Fuel Injection can self-tune on the fly. The 48-volt lithium-ion battery negates the need for formerly belt driven components to lighten the load. A 9G-TRONIC transmission allows gears to shift seamlessly and quiet the ride. I did grin at the paddle shifters, as who wants to sport-shift a limo?

4MATIC drive sends power to all four wheels when needed. The AIRMATIC suspension and Adaptive Damping quickly adjust to deliver a buttery smooth ride. DYNAMIC SELECT offers six distinct driving modes: Eco, Comfort, Sport, Individual and “Maybach Mode,” which prioritizes rear-passengers.

10-degree rear axle steering allows for tight turns for such a lengthy car. As mentioned, gas mileage is better than expected with 27mpg on the highway and a 400-mile range.

CABIN

That said, the real winner is a marvelous cocoon surrounding you in sumptuous splendor and technology. There’s so much luxury, so many whiz-bang goodies to enjoy.

The heated and ventilated contrast-stitched multi-contour MANUFAKTUR Tartufo Brown Exclusive Nappa leather seats are to die for. Oh, and drive/ride in euphoric splendor by utilizing five massage settings in front and rear. It’s a welcome reward after a long day at the office desk or on the golf course. Splendid!

More luxury appointments include rapid-heating front/rear seats, heated armrests, neck rapid-heating for rear passengers and air-balance cabin-air purification/fragrance.

The star is the abundant rear seat leg room. Reclining seats combine with thigh and footrests to stretch your limbs. In fact, passengers enjoy a full eight inches more legroom than the front. That is some first-class room! The rear includes two video screens, separate climate controls and heated/cooled cup holders.

64-color ambient lighting fits any mood. Power rear and side sun visors provide a darker environment. A vast panoramic roof brightens the cabin when desired.

Soft-close doors are a personal favorite. Trunk storage is a generous 12.9 cubic feet, but is limited if you desire a rear-seat refrigerator option.

TECH TOYS

The 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen houses the vast menu selections. I do wonder why these screens don’t include a matte finish to minimize fingerprints (I have one on my phone). A 12.3-inch digital instrumentation cluster is programmable to display additional settings. The clear Head-Up Display is handy to keep the driver’s eyes forward rather than look down for directions and speed limits.

The Burmester High-End 4D Surround System includes 30 speakers and a combined 1,750 watts. The front door speakers rotate and light up when turned on. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto work nicely, as do the handsfree “Hey Mercedes” commands.

Of course, mindboggling technology and safety measures are at your disposal. The Maybach will gently remind you to stay in your lane, constantly scans traffic up to 1,600 feet sensing traffic patterns to help prevent front collisions (Collision Prevention Assist), brace you for a rear-ender (Predictive Occupant-Protection), and PRE-SAFE brake with Pedestrian Recognition. The radar-enabled Distronic Plus adaptive cruise keeps you safely behind cars ahead.

The 2026 Mercedes-Maybach S 580 4MATIC is an amazing blend of lavish luxury, remarkable performance and giddy technology. It’s the perfect vehicle to enjoy as a passenger and whoever gets behind the wheel. You’ll feel like a million bucks without shelling out seven-figures. The bottom line is all passengers will feel like they’ve truly arrived, no matter the destination.

James Bond would be duly impressed, whether driven or taken for a ride.
