Instruction – Compression Obsession

One drill you can do to stay more connected and get better compression is to grab an exercise band and place it above your elbows. From here, practice rotating back, keeping your right elbow close to your side. This will help your right elbow not flare out on your backswing.

Practicing hitting shots with the band will help your arms stay connected.

At impact, it is very important the lead wrist stays flat; grip and hands are in front of the ball. This will ensure solid compression. If the grip and hands are behind the ball at impact, this will result in a chunk or thin shot. If the left wrist is cupped at impact, this will result in a fat or thin shot.

The Drill

Place your club across your chest and practice rotating your lead shoulder back behind the golf ball, where your clubhead points behind the golf ball, while not moving your head laterally back. When you rotate your lead shoulder back, your trail leg will straighten and trail hip will turn. On the downswing, your head will stay in the same spot and your lead shoulder will move left slightly as if you are moving into a wall, and then rotate your lead shoulder and hip against the ball. It is important your weight is not staying on your trail foot and that your weight is not moving laterally too much left.
