Tony Romo’s Attempt To Qualify For U.S. Open Falls Short

Tony Romo was one of 8,500 hopefuls to move on from local qualifying for this year’s U.S. Open. Yet, like last year, Tony’s efforts came up short shooting a 5-over 77 at Gleneagles Country Club in Plano, Texas. 132 players gathered Monday to battle for eight spots in sectional qualifying. Only eight players shot under-par.

One has to give Tony credit for trying. For comparison, playing partner Braden Haley finished 2nd with a 3-under 69. His other partner Hayden Wood only shot 3 better than the NBC lead football analyst. Still, the ex-Cowboy QB still beat or tied 77 other players who finished their rounds.

Entry into qualifying was open to any professionals or amateurs with a USGA handicap index of 1.4 or lower. Of the 9,049 entries received, more than 8,500 participants will play in one of the 112 local qualifiers, with only the top 500 players advancing to sectionals. The remaining 500 players, plus 450 exempt competitors, compete in 36-hole events to earn spots int he 156-player U.S. Open field. About half of those slots are available for qualifiers.
