Elements of Style – Five Summer Grooming Tips for Men
Summertime in the DFW Metroplex means drinks by a highrise pool, road trips to the lake and backyard barbecues with friends. Skin and hair care is probably the last thing on your mind while out having fun in the sun. The intense Texas sun and humid conditions should make your skin and hair care routine a priority. With a few grooming tips, you can stay looking and feeling your best no matter how hot it gets outside.
The Boardroom Salon for Men has five grooming tips that you need this summer.
No. 1: Avoid Sun Damage
We’ve all heard this before, but seriously: You need sunscreen even if you have a beard and a full head of hair.
It is not only important to wear sunscreen, but to make sure to wear it correctly. Better than just a baseball cap, sunscreen is the ultimate protection. How much should you use? As a rule of thumb, use a penny-sized amount for the face and one shot glass-sized squeeze for the body.
As it gets hotter, it’s important to increase the level of SPF protection. Start the day by applying a face moisturizer with a SPF of 20+.
At Boardroom Salon, we recommend Jack Black products for face and skin care. Not only is the line formulated from the finest plant extracts, herbs and healing botanicals – it’s also lightweight and non-greasy.

No. 2: Exfoliate Twice a Week
Exfoliating is one of the easiest ways a man can combat the sun and give his skin that fresh, clean look. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells, speeds up cell turnover, minimizes blocked pores, and prevents ingrown hairs caused by shaving.
Exfoliating two times a week does the trick. Remember that rubbing too hard can cause irritation. You should use your fingertips and rub in a gentle, circular motion while avoiding the eye area, followed by a rinse with warm water.
Last but not least, invest in a quality shaving brush. The brush will exfoliate the skin and remove dead skin, again allowing the razor to get a close cut while also giving skin a healthier look and feel.

No. 3: Stay Hydrated
We’re not just talking about guzzling H2O.
Hydrating the skin with a daily facial moisturizer is a must. It will prevent your face from overproducing oil and being left with a shiny nose and forehead.
Lock in moisture after shaving by applying after-shave gel to the face and neck. Choose one with a blend of moisturizers and essential oils.

No. 4: Don’t Skip Hair Conditioner
The elements of summer – sun, chlorine and salt water – can wreak havoc on men’s hair. A detoxing shampoo can strip away summer’s damage and rid the hair of product residue, pollutants and hard-water minerals; however, shampoos can leave your hair feeling dry. A conditioner is necessary to keep hair and scalp moisturized.

No. 5: Get Haircuts Frequently
The best way to always look your best and mend damage is with a quality haircut. Regular maintenance can make your hair and beard less uncomfortable during the hottest months.
If you usually schedule a trim every four weeks, this summer make it every three. Even if you have decided to grow out your look this summer, it still requires some maintenance. The key to an amazing look, no matter the length, is to always look like it was done on purpose.
